HIV Neurobehavioral Research Program

HNRP associated studies primarily focus on understanding the effect of HIV and co-factors on the central nervous system (CNS).  Major themes include research into cognitive impairment, neurologic disorders, and antiretroviral issues (for example, understanding and optimizing CNS treatment, drug resistance, etc.), especially in the context of co-factors such as methamphetamine abuse and aging.

Summary:

Are you HIV positive and on stable Antiretroviral Therapy (ART)? We want to

learn if cannabis has an effect on your ART regimen. If interested, give us a call and find

out if you are eligible. The #1 requirement is that you’re on HIV meds. Other requirements

In order to participate you must be*:

  • Currently on a steady HIV treatment

  • Cannabis and non-cannabis users

  • Willing to do some concentration tests

Measurement of ART Drug Concentrations in Brain by 19f-MRS as an Indicator of Neurotoxicity

Summary:

Participate in a one-time research visit looking at the effects of your current HIV medication

and your brain.

Study visit consists of:

  • A brief medical interview

  • A blood draw

  • An MRI

Visit lasts about 4 hours.

Compensation of $120

Transportation provided (within San Diego County)

 

You may qualify if you are taking any of the following HIV medications*:

  • Pifeltro (Doravirine)

  • Emtriva (Emtricitabine)

  • Tivicay, Juluca (Dolutegravir)

Cannabidiol for Sedative/Hypnotic-sparing Management of Insomnia in Adults

Cannabidiol for Sedative/Hypnotic-sparing Management of Insomnia in Adults

 

Status: Enrolling

 

Summary:

A randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled phase II study to examine the noninferiority and efficacious dose range of CBD in managing symptoms of insomnia compared to sedative/hypnotic medication. We will measure sleep outcomes objectively using wrist-worn actigraphy as well as by self-report via real-time ecological momentary assessment and traditional questionnaires. We will also compare objective next-morning neuropsychological performance.

 

Who can participate*:

Adults 18 and older

who have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep

who are not taking medications for sleep problems, or are willing to stop taking them.

 

You can receive up to $225 for participating in this study

  • 1 visit – baseline only – (8 hours)

  • Some candidates may qualify: MRI / PET visits separately

Potential Benefits of Egrifta on the Brain

Summary:

The HNRP-CMCR at UCSD is conducting a study examining the potential benefits of Egrifta® on the brain.

What is Egrifta*:

  • Injectable prescription medication

  • Contains growth hormone-releasing factor

  • Reduces excess abdominal fat in HIV-infected individuals with lipodystrophy

In order to participate you must be*:

  • HIV positive with abdominal fat

  • Ages 40 and up

  • Currently on stable antiretroviral therapy

  • Wiling to do MRIs

Other information

  • Lab results (at no cost to you)

  • Monetary compensation

  • Free 6 months supply of Egrifta®
