Invisible in Plain Sight HIV Has Never Been Just a Man’s Story
For much of the public conversation, HIV has historically worn a male face. Gay men rightfully became the public image of the epidemic because they were devastated by it and led much of the early activism that forced governments and healthcare systems to respond. But they did not fight alone. Lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer women helped build care networks, fight discrimination, and support overwhelmed communities, while cisgender women like Mary Fisher and Elizabeth Glaser helped bring national attention to the epidemic and push for research, compassion, and policy change.. Yet despite that history, women living with HIV have too often become invisible in the broader conversation; even though they have always been central to this epidemic.
